Vera Ivy Tilley/bowdlery

This lady was born in Poplar in 1899, and has not been heard of since she appeared in the 1911 census. Any information would be very much appreciated.

Vera is on the 1911 census as an 'inmate' of the Great Clacton Orphanage, and I'm guessing (hoping really) that she was adopted. That would possibly be a change of name and explain why she doesnt appear elsewhere.

Think I have found her older sister, Alice Ethel who passed away 31/5/1985 in Bexley, Kent. Never married.
she would have been 12 when Vera was 11 so maybe deemed old enough to fend for herself, or to get a servants job so not in orphanage with Vera

Alice Ethel May Tilley was in the orphange on the 1911 aged 12.
Where does the name Bowdlery come into it, it's very uncommon right through the 1900s in England.

DJHawkes, Many thanks for the information. These ladies were my aunts, and I remember Alice, and knew her well. Vera, however, was believed to have run away with a married man many years ago,and nobody ever knew what happened to her. The name Bowdlery appeared when I asked for information on the Rootschat site some time ago, but although I printed it out, I am unable to find it. The inference then was that they lived together, but never married. I shall continue my search, using both names. Thank you again

could be worth buying 2 death certificates, 1 for each of these ladies and look at who reported the death and the address etc. Both are on ancestry but you can purchase cheaper through the official site. All you need are date, district, volume and page which you have for Alice. Let me know if you need Vera's details
