Any idea what the above occupation would have been in 1911 .... the above is how it seems to read on the census ............ this is in the industrial black country where the father's occupation is caol miner/hewer if that helps!! Have googles to no avail!!

gotta say, re-reading this, at the point myblackhen said sahe had had a hurdy gurdy herself, all seemed fine, then she was told not to show herself up' and it all went downhill. This is the genealogy topic guys, we don;t tend to spat in here.

no need, but myblackhen was correct in her thought on the hurdy gurdy toy having pierced card, and you can imagine a larger adult version was being made for commercial music machines, similar to that, in the 1900s. I certainly knew what she was trying to describe,

My nan had a Hirdy Gurdy wind up thing too. That's what she called it and I never heard it called anything else.
