I have been asked by a relative if anyone knows why in the household columns one child has been registered as N child. He wonders if that means natural child .A nicer term than illegitimate. It is known that the parents were not Married. This was a census of about 80 years ago.

This link suggests that 'n child' is the same as 'nurse child':

That leads me to this quote:
"A ‘nurse child’ can mean a number of things, from informally adopted or fostered, to temporarily ‘farmed out’ to close kin, or family friends or near neighbours or private individuals who offered a service . . . "
