I set myself the task, many years ago, of trying to locate my paternal grandmothers' grave. I remember my dad saying her funeral was in 1936, when he was 14, and it was in Royton, Oldham. So she died a few years before I was born. I managed to find her name by googling Oldham cemeteries. It turns out she is in Hollinwood cemetery, not Royton. I went to Hollinwood and the lady there was very helpful, telling me that the grave was B13-89. The sad thing is, it's a mass grave and not marked, and she would have been buried in one plot with 10 other people. I felt really sad. A bit upset really to know that she had a paupers' funeral. It's just an open field now. A big disappointment. But I intend to mount a bronze plaque for her. She was only 40 when she died and had been very ill most of her life. I feel I ought to do it. So it will be done.
