Can anyone tell me where the surname Bartolo comes from?

According to www.spatial-literacy.org (University college London) research it is Italian & Spanish originally. In 1998 the largest number of people with that name in the Uk were resident in East London & second largest group in Cardiff area - also quite a spread in the Kilmarnock & Arran area. The name was not around in the UK in 1881 so they have arrived here since then.
