AmI going mad! I've been using ancestry for several months and am sure that I could view a census record (not the original image) without having to pay to view. Now though it appears I have to pay to view even though it doesn't cost anything to look at the census records when I have.
Spoke to ancestry and they assure me that's always been the case, but I'm convinced I could do this. Has anyone else had this or am I really a total frutcake!
I have most of the census images already just need to check 1 or 2 missing ones which may have surnames wrongly transcribed and don't want to pay for something I might not need. Thanks in advance for any input

Hi arlibop, I've bought a years subscription to ancestry so I don't know about the pay to view, but if you want to post the names which you want to look up I could look them up for you. I don't know if you are aware, but http://www.findmypast.com/HomeServlet
are (or already have done) about to release census returns on their website, which are free if you have signed up to BMD records.
you can look at the census content apart from occupation on the site as far as i am aware, that is what i use. You can look at anyone in the same household too.

Thanks for your offer spudqueen but one of the names is Johnson so lots of different spellings there! Will check out the site you mention. dot.hawkes thank you too now I know I'm not crazy! Wonder why Ancestry denied that youused to be able to do this and why I cant do it now. Grrr
actually i am not subscribing to the site at the moment but i can look at the 1881 free index, which gives all the info except occupation , the other indexes are locked out unless you subscribe and i am not doing that just now as i have no use for it, I am beyond census returns on all my lines, I am looking more at parish registers and quarter session records now.

I used to be able to look at any census records and view any images I had already viewed in the past for any year but I can't do that anymore so if I want to look at an image I've already paid to see I have to pay again.
It's really annoying esp as they've put up the cost by 2 but not given extra time only an extra 2 views
