I have my grandfathers rank and number and know he was stationed in Dublin in 1894 and in Malta in 1904 but that is all I know - any ideas where to look for my info.

knowing the regiment is key, but if you can,get hold of a book called 'my ancestor was in the british army' by Michael Watts. it lists all the various sources for each decade and regiment. If you have the regiment I can check my copy for you to see what records survive. Muster Books are probably your best source. or the medal rolls.

Question Author
Thanks for this. On his marriage certificate 1894 he is stated as a Bombardier R.A. (which I take as Royal Artillery). His name is James Henry Brown and on my father's birth certificate in 1904 Tigne Malta it states he is a Gunner and his no. is 63935. If you could find any more info it would be great.
Hi I think you might find this site helpful and I wondered if RA meant regular army, but have a look here anyway:

I have just come across your question posted 26/02/07. I too am trying to trace my family tree and James Henry Brown was my Grandfather. Did you get anywhere with your search re his history ie where he was married etc.
