what happens to a persons medical records after they have died?

Medical records are not usually classed as a source for family history or genealogy and I am pretty sure that records of deceased patients from the GP are sent to the County Family Practitioners office, whether these are kept for any length of time i don't know, I think i read somewhere that a portion are kept but can't remember why that was.
Coroners records are only kept for 30 years i do know that.
