best genealogy site

Can anyone recommend the best genealogy site to subscribe to for ancestry info starting in England and Ireland. I've looked at several sites but then have to pay for the detail which I'm happy to do but which one should I join?

I've been with both Ancestry.co and Genes Reunited and found that Ancestry.co was the best.I cancelled my subscription and they keep blasting me with emails about special offers ,so you might get it at a reduced rate at the moment as they seem to be pushing it.Polly

Well I pay an annual subscription to 2 sites....ancestry.co.uk and thegenealogist.co.uk.......for my research I would say that ancestry is the better of the 2. However, I have not tried researching in Ireland so could not comment on that.
I also build my tree on GenesReunited and have received a lot of valuable information from other users on that site.

If you have to research Irish Ancestry you are better joining one of the Irish Family History Societies:

the reason for this is not just to find what sources have been tranbscribed ot indexed, but also to tap into the wealth of knowledge and experience being with a FHS brings.

I also agree that ancestry.co,uk is the best site but u can use the library edition free in your local reference library and look at the GRO index to birth death and marriage 1837 -1984+ and all the census returns 1841-1901, all for free, you can also join their support groups there too.
I always recommend using the free version at the library first if you can get there, as it gives you time to work out how the index works and also it means you are not paying to learn how to use the site and the records.

Ancestry all the way 2gbmum ..... it's being upgraded all the time with new and better ways to search .... I do use genesreunited too but only to trace people who are also working on parts of my tree, not for searching for ancestors directly.

I originally built my tree by using heritage family tree software and this created (as most do) a .gedcom file .... I have since chosen to upload this on to my own website via www.tribalpages.com ................... this is �16 or so a year, but well worth it as I can share it with relatives around te world easily ...... and it can produce charts and store text and photos etc ............... if you want to have a look at my tree just to see the layout it creates, drop me a line at [email protected] and I will give you access.

Just for info there is another site that is a great help with queries of Family Research it is a Forum on the British Genealogy website.British-Genealogy.com All sorts of brains answer questions there and they are all very helpful.

When trying to access databases for details one has to buy credits. Does anyone know why when one buys credits they only last for say 10 days? This is very frustrating if one is delayed in any way in one's investigations. Can one get a refund or extension of the time?
