Adoption/birth cerficate

A friend of mine was born in 1968 under the name of AB. His mother and father divorced and his mother married Mr W in 1972. He and his siblings were then adopted by Mr W. He has just been accepted for a job which requires high level security clearance so he needs his birth cert amongst other things. I have found a record of his birth in 1968 under the name of "AB". The original volume number and page has been manually crossed out and a new volume number and page number written in. I can't find him under the name AW (which is the name he has gone under since 1972). He has told me that he can get a copy of his adoption, but needs to have a meeting with an "adoption officer" which he thinks is a pile of **** since he knows all the facts, he just wants the documentation.

Can anyone throw any light on this or point to how I can prove he properly goes under the name of "AW" without him having to do a statutory declaration?

have you checked the adoption register? There will be a cross reference to his original birth registration, the rules apply to a child adopted by none natural parents but for a child who was adopted by a step-parent when a natural parent remained on the scene there may be a different system. has he spoken to the registrar of the office where the adoption registration took place to clarify the reason he has am adoption entry?

This happened to my brother and I. Our mother remarried after our fathers death and we were adopted by both our mothers new husband and by our real mother (they both had to adopt us otherwise we would only have had one legal parent - and that wouldn't have been our real mother!). Anyway, my mother kept all the documentation so I have my original birth certificate, all the papers relating to the adoption (including the ones with my first surname on) and my 'new' birth certificate. Maybe your friends mother also kept all this sort of stuff. I remember when I applied for my first passport I had to send a copy of the adoption certificate rather than a birth certificate.

Unfortunately, my friend and his mother are estranged and I gather he would rather cut his leg off with a rusty spoon and eat it than contact her. So I guess he will have to consult the adoption register.

I just wondered the significance of the new reference numbers that have been entered in the original register.

Just re-read dots answer and I can assure you that it makes no difference as to whether there is a step parent, real parent, or not, the adoptions went through as any other adoption.
