my 3xgreat grandfather was a solicitor in a loom society in Liverpool in the 1850s, is there any way I can find out anything about this? Tried googling to no avail. His name was William Robertson, b. London c.1813

There is a Gores Directory of Liverpool for 1853 which will list the society and their address/directors etc.

Liverpool Record Office shoUld hold the records:

I have a William Robertson, born London 1813, with a wife Susan in the 1851 census living in Derby, but he is solicitor to a loan society, not loom..
That does make more sense craft, as the members of Loom societies were mainly hand-loom weavers working from home, plUs they Used wool for hand loom weaving and there wasn't alot of wool in Liverpool! The Loom societies were like small trade Unions and the members coUld probably not afford a solicitor! (If I had been paying attention last night it woUld have clicked!)

ah, that sounds like him, and like I've got a dodgy transcript! I must admit it seemed a bit odd, which was why I was interested in finding out more.
