How likely is it that the same person would be on 2 separate census records?I have Philip Marsh( born 1871 in Jersey ) in Middlesbrough with his wife Agnes on the 1901 census which is correct, then on another 1901 census Philip Marsh( born 1871 Jersey)on the Tees river on a boat called "Claudia".Given that i know he was a sailor and was born on Jersey it seems too much of a coincidence for him not to be the same person don't you think? Thanks Polly

I think they are 2 different people.
The one with Agnes is Phillip JC Marsh (with 2 LL's) and I have looked at the original census form for the other guy and he is actually Philip March.
Having said that when he married Agnes Adamson his name was spelt Philip not Phillip.

Thanks craft, yes I noticed that too. When i was searching for Philip in the earlier censuses there was no sign of him as Marsh but I did find a Mash, and found his sister at the age of 21 in Jersey penitentiary!Agnes's daughter Harriet Agnes was my OH's Grandmother and was always referred to as Granny Marsh.Apparently she used to lay bodies out, she died as a result of a fall down some pub steps!
Polly my mum's grandma died in a pub!

Lol!She wasn't from Middlesbrough was she?
You have to look back and think about how the forms were filled in , when they were filled in and by whom, the boat captain would have been given a form to complete for anyone on board on census night, one would have been dropped off at agnes and phillips home and there would have been two different districts as vessels were covered seperate4ly to land returns. therefore different enumerators, so yes it is quite possible that he appears rwice as two seperate people were responsible for filling in the return, the captain of the claudia and agens or philip at home

Thanks Dot ,that makes sense.I had visions of the enumerator rowing out on a boat to the vessel, only joking!
