They were wearing red during the Zulu War, but with firearms becoming ever more accuarate and over longer distances they finally got the message that wearing the most conspicuous target colour in the spectrum wasn't the brightest thing to do. By the time they fought in the Sudan in 1898 and a year later in the Boer War they were wearing khaki. Not sure of the exact year.
