York Minster Never Complete: Hand Over to Catholic Church?
I remember being told that a cathedral of some sort (I thought York Minster) will never be officially complete, as when it is, it must be handed from CofE to the Catholic Church.
Is this correct? If not, what cathedral am I thinking of?
I can find no information, about York Minster, or other cathedral(-like) building.
Thanks!

when England became Anglican, it was basically Henry VIII making himself the leader instead of the pope; so all churches went with him. Those who stayed true to Rome subsequently had to build their own churches (though I don't think this happened until the 19th century; Roman Catholicism was more or less banned until then). I can't think of any circumstances in which an Anglican church might revert to RC

It's got its tower now and it's still Anglican.

I had the same memory and found your question when trying to search for it. The best I can find is a quote from The York Civic Trust in an article which says it's a local joke - I think the joke being that neither thing (the work finishing or the handing over) would ever happen.
"There is a joke in York that if the Minster is ever seen free from scaffolding, the Roman Catholic Church will have it back. But they never will as there are about 40 people employed in the stoneyard and there is an indefinite programme of restoration and repair. "
