just old age, I think. Biography here. But there seems every chance she never actually lived, or at most was based very remotely on a real person; some of her most famous prophecies were written well after the events, and her claim that the world would end in 1881 didn't pan out. I remember reading an American book about prophesies once, and it described Mother Shipton as a "High School Dropout"! LOL

I think she predicted her own death and was burned at the stake for witchcraft. Her prophecy poems do give food for thought even as events unfold and happen in our times... just as she predicted!!
