What are the main theories behind the striking simarities (eg the similar looking pyramids/hieroglyphics etc.) between the Ruins located in Mexico & Egypt? (and too a much lesser extent the ruins in indochina?)

Erich von Dniken's explanation is quite... well judge for yourself!

Sorry to highjack your thread dave_c, but does anyone know how large aliens should be? Could they be as small as germs and virusses?

With the technology of the time, a stepped pyramid was a good way to build a large high structure.

I'm not aware of a similarity between Egyptian and South American hieroglyphs - can you elaborate?

they're not that similar. Mayan (Mexican) pyramids are more like steps up to a temple, whereas Egyptian ones contain tombs. Historically, I believe Egyptian ones developed from putting one tomb building on top of another, while Mexican ones started out as temples on small plinths - in each case, buildings were just built higher than their predecessors. The ones at Teotihuacan are more like Egyptian ones - square base - but there are only a handful, as the people who built them seem to have vanished. I think Pinotage is right: if early societies wanted to build high, step pyramids would have been the obvious way to do it.
PS - sorry, just to expand on that, Teotihuacan is also in Mexico, near Mexico City, and not related to the Maya, who lived much later and in the south on the Yucatan peninsula.

Also try seeing what Graham Hancock has to say on the subject in his book 'The Fingerprints of the God'.  Have a look here
