My father has died and I am trying to arrange his funeral. He served during the second world war in Europe, Africa and finally Burma. He spoke very little about his experiences and I cannot remember what regiment he served with. Is it possible to obtain this information and if so, where?

Many thanks

does he have old friends or family members you could ask?
Good luck, I really wish I had found out more about my grandfather's service days before he passed away.
This might be a place to start:

If your father served in Burma the the Burma Star Association may be able to help. www.burmastar.org.uk
I did the same after my father died 7 years ago and I do have details and an address I think, but I will have to look it out and get back to you.As far as I remember I needed his army number and regiment, but may be possible without this,as that would just make it easier for them!
If you by chance know his service number or units he served with army records will help, they do have a website with contact details.
This might be a useful starting point.

I'm sorry for your loss and hope you find the information you want.
Dis he belong to a Regimental Association ? If so, they may be able to help.

He would have been awarded campaign medals and these would usually have his service number engraved on the edges. Speak to his close men friends, especially those he knew for a long time - the may have shared memories which might give you important leads, ie, regiment, company etc.

The fact that he went on to serve in Burma after fighting in North Africa and Europe will narrow your search considerably as not many units did this, unless he transferred regiments. Once you have discovered his regiment there will be websites you can access for more leads.

The essentials are regiment and service number.

Good luck - and commiserations.

This is not a criticism, but children often regret not talking to their parents about their past. Once they've gone, their history has gone with them.

Try www.forces-war-records.co.uk. They have an initial search box which requires only his forname(s) and surname to start. You may need to subscribe to access any records, but they have a short-term subscription for less than £9.
