he's in a tree on ancestry as dying 1920 but there is no back up source and nothing on the index. I think he has been indexed as John Leason, Q1 1926, Manchester North 8d 778. by that I mean in the original index, not the transcriptio n. it's worth a follow up if you haven't already checked that entry.

if it is any further help, there is only one John LEASON on the 1911 born in the 1850s and he was living in northhampton and his death is registered there in 1923, and so the john leason registered at manchester north in Q1 1926 is either missing from every searchable previous census and the civil registration index or the name is wrong.
in 1916, John's youngest son ernest, born 1898, enlisted at ashton under lyne and gave his father john as next of kin and john's address was Bolton-old-Road but as yet i cannot read the place name, though it seems to end in shaw, but nor openshaw nor wythenshase, it will be north manchester because of the name of the road and it's bugging me cos i know the area!
ok I've found John Charles on the 1911, he was living with his married daughter Marian, he is transcribed as John Charles Ledraw and they are at 513 Mill Street, Openshaw. so maybe t is Bolton Old Road Openshaw in 1916. Son Charles Ernest is also there aged 12, John is a widower and an iron foundry worker.

Thanks for all your help. Yes, he was born 1852 in Liverpool. I will send for the death cert you mention. Did not pick that one up. (Leason). Where did you get the info on Ernest enlisting ? Been doing my family tree 2 years. I am still learning. What is a film index ? You have been most helpful, thanks again.
the WW1 soldiers papers are now on ancestry, Ernest survived the war and was discharged to the reserve just like my own grandad was, and my grandad was also called ernest actually! Ernest was in France from 1916 to 1917 and was awarded the victory medal, he lived at 5 heather street, clayton .
When you look at the ancestry index for birth marriages and deaths, it also gives you the chance to look at the original image, the image is a photographed version of the original GRO index and often there are omissions or discrepancies and so it is always worth checking the original image.
