Can You Remeber The Big Storm Of 1987 ?

I can vividly, we were home on leave from Dubai and going back next day so had last minute shopping to buy and nice English M&S food we wanted to take back with us, parked the car in Wood Green and got blown down the High Rd en route to M&S the High Rd was deserted apart from one policeman who advised us to turn round and go home, cant I said must get to M&S he said we were mad ! we were the only customers had the whole store to ourselves. Next day we only saw one other car on the M25 as we headed for Heathrow it was as though the Martians had landed not a soul to be seen quite spooky and of course after returning the hire car and eventually reaching check in & no planes were taking off anyway.

slept through it and didn't know about it until alerted by my excitable family the next morning. A small shrub had blown over.

Yes, always regret that I woke up briefly and wondered what the noise was but went back to sleep without checking. I lived in a house in the woods at the time but nothing disastrous happened.

Lived in a very old house,Dee....lots of outbuildings with what I though were dodgy roofs and had always worried about.
I slept through the lot and we had not a bit of damage, happily...☺

I remember the aftermath of it but I don`t remember where I was. There were two of them and I remember the second one as I took off in a 737 in it. I remember thinking, "Blimey, it`s a bit bumpy this morning"

Was in a riverside property in Wroxham at the time, a few leaves had blown into the garden, but couldn't get out of the Village because of fallen trees so went down the Pub (Hotel Wroxham) for the Day.

I was in Norfolk....utter carnage.....lost at least 6 trees of 30+ feet....many roofs lost....no power for several days...roads blocked by fallen trees...scary scary stuff !

Yes I do, my other half was working nights and we were chatting on the phone one minute and the next minute the phone cables came down. Our next door neighbours tree fell on her car.She weren't bothered as it was a company car!

We were enroute back to the US after visiting the in laws in Hertfordshire....didnt know about it till we got back to NYC...phew!!

I remember being called to a thatched longhouse in the village, where a chimney had "disappeared".
Had a look upstairs and there it was...... lying peacefully in the double bed.
Didn't have time to read it a story. Had to prop the floor in a hurry :o)

I was on nights, bl99dy awful winds, saw trees blowing over in Pancras Rd north London, a sheet of glass fell from the trainshed roof and missed me by a couple of feet. All the lights were out and we had to use torches. It took about 10 hours to get home normally took and hour and a half.

Slept through it. Phones out. Walked to the school I was teaching at, climbing over uprooted trees. School was closed.
Later walked towards the beach, a few boats blocking the road about 400 yards from the sea.

Yep remember it well, went to see simply red in concert at birmingham, it was a tad windy.

Was at work the following day, and was organising a big event to be opened by Maggie Philbin of Tomorrows World TV show, who was married to Cheggers (Keith Chegwin) at the time. Spoke to Keith first on the phone who said they "were in Sevenoaks, which was now re-named One Oak"!

Went to bed feeling a bit scared and slept like a log till mr P woke me up and said "Hey look out the window"Was very scaring with wind blowing a a gale, so put my head under the covers and went back to sleep --unbelievable.
Family and friends said they were shocked that i slept through it all. Next day going for a stroll we saw the devestation!!

I was working out side on Salisbury Plain when this was going on, and was watching full grown beech trees going over right next to us...you just had to watch which way to run. Scary but exciting in a way.

I remember, because we were kept late at school and not allowed on the buses until they had checked with everyone's parents that it was ok.

I lived in Birmingham at the time and the effects were very limited there, we were just on the edge of the winds - but my elderly parents were living outside Brighton and right in the middle of it. It was scary not having telephone contact for over three days to find out if they were OK - so mary trees there were decimated, it had to be seen to be believed. Dad's greenhouse was lifted off the ground and smashed all over the lawn - they were picking up glass for weeks afterwards, and he never rebuilt it.

Living in a 7th floor flat in a big block in Westminster, I slept through it. All my lights were working but, when I went down, all the corridor lights were on safety level . I said to the porter "Why are these lights low?" and he replied laconically "Just go outside, Sir". Sure enough,right outside in the street there were two cars crushed by a tree, and a lot of other serious damage
