We have had terrible trouble with this and the culprit was the carpet beetle. They look like small grey and black ladybirds in the summer but its their larvae that cause the problem, they leave papery cases a bit larger than a rice grain. We bought some special stuff from Amazon and had to spray every room but the damage was done.
An intensive squirt of bug spray?

Are you in the UK, do you have pets?
Might there be a recently deceased person under the floorboards?

Thank you for your replies, it convinced they were moths. I have saved three of these so called maggots which have been put into a jam jar. They have maded their way to the top and attached to the lid now. We will see what emerges. In the meantime will have look for a spray to treat the carpet. Thanks!
