Preparation For D-Day

As a youngster I remember, travelling on the A64 to Scarborough, just after the war, that there were lines of military vehicles, parked up on the central reservation of the dual carriageway.
My father told me they were surplus to requirements for D-Day.
I have googled this but cannot find any more information.
Does anyone have any links, I would be grateful if so.

Comment would obviously be limited as a result of war conditions as in the Huns may be reading The Scarborough Inquirer in order to elicit the Allies' intentions.

The Normandy landing involved a million men didnt it?
You had to put them somewhere before hand

After the war there was a huge surplus of military vehicles. Airfields that were no longer in use were often used to park them in their hundreds. It could be you saw these parked temporarily before they were moved on to a more permanent parking area.

Were they perhaps part of the plan to throw the Germans off the real planned invasion point?
