days in a week

i have always thought there were 8 days in a week, but in recent times this has been challenged, can anyone confirm that I am correct and that i have no surprises coming my way?

yesterday, this time last week, the other day, wash day, end of the week, weekend, (which we all now is two days) and Monday morning.

without wanting to stray into the area of bad taste janesmythe it's worth noting that living an extra day every week has meant that two of the Beatles finished early; so much the worse for the rest of us.

yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away and then came Monday.

The seven day week corrolates to the seven (astrological) "planets" known to the ancients: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. A solar year could be more evenly divided into weeks of 5 days, and the moon phases five-day and six-day weeks make a better short term fit (6 times 5 is 30) to the lunar (synodic) month (of about 29.53 days) than the current week (4 times 7 is 28). The seven-day week may have been chosen because its length approximates one moon phase (one quarter = 29.53 / 4 = 7.3825).

Roman soldiers stationed in Egypt became accustomed to the pagan seven-day week and began to introduce it into their own homeland to replace their eight-day marketing week. Octavian (Caesar Augustus) and succeeding Roman rulers permitted this practice but it wasn't made official until the emperor Constantine took that step in A.D. 321.

dothawkes, I really wish they kept the 8th day in place, but the it became unpopular in the late 20thC and was dropped because the authorities made this a working day instead of a weekend day.  The *'*******.

Just to confuse the matter. Technically do any weeks exist! No really. I mean it. We just invented time so we knew where we were at certain times. So invariably a week doesn't actually exist it just is an idea we invented to help day to day life. So a week is not 8 days but 0 days actually its _______ days as they dont exist. so its ____ _____.

hi dotty, there was 8 days in a week, the 8th being lazyday, it came between sunday and monday, twas a day for all the ladies to relax, unfortunately one of the male rulers of some obscure country decided to knock it on the head, and the rest of the world (ruled by males) went along with it too   :(

Well I know I was off work last Monday, and having worked every day since, including yesterday, (Sunday), and today, then as it is my day off tomorrow, I have worked seven days straight, so my day off this week is tuesday, which is eight days.

No worries jno, I got it now-up to day after yesterday (mind you, that's the only day in a week, over yonder, at the dark side) I wondered why I died in Samarra so long ago. I'm 'quit for the next' (year).

I don't know what dothawkes is on about, but in Spanish and French, a fortnight is 15 days.

Yes you might be right, because I only got up late this morning and so I have lost half a day!
