Ancestry.co.uk often do a 14 day Free-trial......you ought to be able to view his service record if you join up. Don't forget to cancel before the 'pay-period' kicks in, though! :o)
You can often access ancestry.co.uk free at your local library...........
I've been trying to help another member of a.b. find out what a relative of his did to win a Military Medal on the first day of the Somme, but it is extremely difficult to find out as a lot of the records were destroyed during the London Blitz.
We've been looking at the actions taken by the regiment he served in just to get an idea of what happened during the fighting on that day, so while we may not get the details of what exactly he did to be awarded the medal, we at least have a good knowledge of what happened and we can maybe make an educated guess at what happened to him
as craft says - check if your library has a free subscription. (You'll probably have to go to the library to use it, I don't think Ancestry let them offer remote access.)
If you approach the individual regiments, they often have an archivist of their own, but normally charge a small amount to do research for you.
