Thank you janbee, bhg, & bibblebub
About time we moved on to a new one, isn't it ?
I thought we were in the Age of Aquarius ;-)
Anthropocene isn't widely accepted or used. More usual terms are the Holocene period in terms of geology. We are also in a glacial interstadial period. In terms of archaeology we're still in the iron age (especially in Burnley). In terms of history we're in the industrial age.
UKIP are living in the early 1950's, if that is any help.
-- answer removed --
The second Elizabethan age.
db...couldn't be more wrong ! We had 100% employment back then, with hundreds of coal mines, steel works, tinplate works, etc. Now we import coal from Western Australia !
I don't think that an age or era is given a descriptive name until later on in history. For example, when Victoria was queen I doubt that people considered themselves to be living in the Victorian Age.
Mickey,

"UKIP are living in the early 1950's,..."

and then

" We had 100% employment back then, with hundreds of coal mines, steel works, tinplate works. . ."

Are you the next lazy-labour defector? :)
Orderlimit.....good try but a failure ! I would like us to go back to a time when we had full employment, plenty of affordable housing, most of our industries back into public ownership. I am Old Labour and I have no difficulty whatsoever in admitting that.

But UKIP want us to go back to the 1950's, so that they can discriminate against black people, homosexuals, women, etc, etc. You only have to look at the type of candidates that they are attracting into the Party. Its been very quiet since just before Xmas but next week, or maybe the week after that, another UKIP scandal will break, and we can look forward to Farage appearing in the media, telling everybody that this person or another has been dealt with, and that it can't happen again.

Until the next time, that is.
Mikey, whilst your condemnation of UKIP is laudable (and long may it continue). There has never been 0% unemployment. 'The high point came in July 1955 - shortly after Anthony Eden had taken over from Winston Churchill as prime minister - when unemployment reached a post-war low of 215,800, a mere 1%.'
Zacs...you are nitpicking. I am unsure whether your tongue is firmly in your cheek or not when you praise me for my condemnation of UKIP, but I presume you meant !
Anthropocene is not widely used yet but it soon will be.

There is no doubt that the factors influencing the planet are vastly dominated by the activities of humans. Our influence far overwhelms any geological factors.
It is the best of times, it is the worst of times, it is the age of wisdom, it is the age of foolishness, it is the epoch of belief, it is the epoch of incredulity, it is the season of Light, it is the season of Darkness, it is the spring of hope, it is the winter of despair, we have everything before us, we have nothing before us, we are all going direct to Heaven, we are all going direct the other way
