Hi, The Lambton Worm was a hideous nasty creature that terrorised the locals near me in Newcastle many years ago. A brave lad decided to swipe at it with a sword and ended up in deeper do-do as each bit he chopped became another nasty worm. Ho ho. What to do? Read on here for more.

P.S. Famous eccentric and TV architecture pundit, Lucinda Lambton, is part of the illustrious family on whose estate the worm was supposed to rampage. They also built a massive triple size Greek temple on a hillside, called Penshaw Monument, for no apparent reason!

Thanks Hippy, Brough back many happy memories. Believe it or not I was born in London 60 years ago. The only child of an old Geordie familiy to be born in London and I can understand every word of it.

There was a terrible film made about this legend.  "Lair of the White Worm". Hilarious rather than scary and definitely of its time.  If you want to see Amanda Donohoe in some domme-like clothes, slaughtered Roman Virgins, and an idiot policeman then it's the film for you.

Hi, ursula62. I hate to confess that I saw the "Lair of the White Worm" many years ago but did not relate it to the subject.
If it's the same film I think the special effects were probably reorded in the Blue Peter Studio with smartie tubes and tissue paper. A low budget classic. Probably scared someone though?
Can not remember Amanda Donohoe going around slaughtering virgins although I often wondered what happened to them all.
