...I'm off to prowl the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool, not been since it opened and I think the area's changed a little since. So what's your view, love it or loathe it or somewhere between?

I haven't been there but I can see a family resemblance to Niemeyers's cathedral in Brasilia, which I have visited and enjoyed. I suppose they have different amounts of sunshine to exploit, though.

Oddly enough the light on the main door facade was stunning when I arrived, quite mild weather too. Then it persisted down suddenly and heavily.

I felt the interior of the church had lost its way architecturally and I found myself wondering if they'd spent up on the build and hoped to catch up one day on the fixtures and fittings, but one day never came..... eg very ugly aluminium framed inner doors, cheap n nasty lighting solutions (chapel of the holy oils - belting great fluorescent tube over the holy objects), and the Nativity installation was the worst, being some kind of contemporary art installation mixed with political message. Also noticed that the approach on the Brownlow Hill side is in need of repair, with broken treads on steps etc.
I believe the diocese has engaged in a rebuild or repair debate, which is interesting.
I would have thought they could redo the tatty bits you found without needing to pull it down and start again. It's attractive from the outside.

But Jno - this is Liverpool. You ask, and someone will fund it.
