Russian Princes

Reading some Russian lit and watching war and peace I am surprised at the number who carry the title Prince
Was it as commonplace as would be suggested

Wikipedia lists over 300 'princely families' in Russia:

The thing is some of the Princes (here I am thinking of Anna Karenina and her brother) seem to have the title and yet he is a civil servant

Ric, the title of “Prince” didn’t mean monied

There are different words for prince in Russian. The common one knyaz does not suggests royalty. It is just a not-very-exciting title of nobility. The heir to the Tsar is called the tsarevich. Sorry I haven't got a cyrillic keyboard or I could give examples.

A prince begat princes and princesses

( the brits didnt - daughters were called The Lady ..... up to the daughters of George III a noted hun )

and all the kids got to be Princes or princesses .....

But you also had princes or the blood ( ie related to the Tsar )

Funny Rick - I was reading around War and Peace at the very moment you were - Nicholas II and Alexander III give good references - altho the scripts are rewritten to show how HOLY the Imperial fambly was ....

they werent that holy hur hur hur - and the royal princes seemed cheerful at the time of screwing anything that moved unless they were gay

so that the Prince of Wales begets princes but there was a bit of a twitch over the princes grandchildren
and Anne's children deffo arent as she was only a princess

Princess Eddy's child is a viscount
and Randy Andy persuaded hismother to give princess title to the two gurlz by special grant as they werent entitled to it

I had seen Czar etc and Tsaritsa and Tsarina
I suppose it doesnt matter much after you have been shot up and otherwise butchered
