We have just had a lovely holiday in Cyprus I have never seen so many overweight people bordering on obesity young and old surely this is a serious problem that should be addressed sooner than later mostly Brits

well i for one think there is a serious problem that really needs to be addressed. cheaper vegetables and fruit and more expensive beers and cigarettes and junk food as in kfc / mcdonalds etc. cheaper government run leisure centres. i joined pure gym for instance which cost me £18 a month but the government run centre near me would be double that.

What do you think we should do about it?
Did it ruin your holiday?

Why is this in history?

What is your solution?
I've usually got the impression that those who are obese are less bothered about their overweight than people who are slimmer than they are. And anyway, what can- really - be done about it? We can't go up to the obese people and drag them to room 101, or its obesity equivalent.
"...a serious problem that should be addressed sooner than later..."

Fat chance.
Bookbinder, they may give the impression that they don't care but they probably really do, they will not admit it for fear of the usual 'well do something about it' or 'change and eat less and exercise more'.

When you are over weight all off the above are very difficult.
Douglas - behave, or is something that there is fat chance of happening.

I am fat and very unfit, I can't deny it as it is obvious. I am constantly trying to lose weight. This is MY problem.

Because obesity can clearly be seen some people feel the need to poke fun at us or they belittle (!!) and/or bully us. When their lives are perfect and they are the model citizens the they can come back and pick on us fatties

last time I was in Cyprus the fattest people were Russians. The men, anyway - the women on their arms were all size-zero blond trollops.
JNO, haven't heard that word for years - Trollops
I believe the collective noun is an essay of trollops. (Or a flourish of strumpets, if you prefer.)
I agree with jno re Cyprus - Russian men with massive guts and skinny women. Didn`t see many Brits
That one of grand words when describing a young lady that she disapproved of. Considering her oldest son was born before her marriage it was so hard not to say something to the old lady with a broomstick. Nasty piece of work.

An essay of Trollop is an odd phrase though.

Who should address this problem, those who notice it or those who are obese?
Don"'t you just love the "something must be done"? Without your taking an active response to this, what do you suggest?
So most of the overweight people were Brits?
I work in a holiday village where just about only Brits come. Almost all of the the women are overweight, while almost all of their partners are skinny, but with beer bellies. I don't know why, or what can be done to help them.
My sister and niece are obese. They eat too much and admit it...
Yep, I should have said it's the eating. No one becomes obese by eating nothing. I have a few relatives who are always at the food table at any family gathering, and they wonder why they're fat. My OH is the same. It's a bit embarrassing sometimes.
I'm sure it'd be nice to get everyone a healthy weight and live a healthy lifestyle but there are no easy answers in a free society. We're still learning about why folk get fat and why some seem to crave more food than others. It's easy for those who naturally live a slimline lifestyle to suggest that it's the same for all, but others know differently. Society is aware of the issue and is investigating causes/fixes already. We'll know in due course what the base causes really are.
By the way, do you have a history of obesity ?

I think weight issues are a mixture of psychological issues and addiction. I think there are a lot of comfort eaters out there, poor self esteem, depression, unresolved issues, previous abuse, medical problems, social anxiety. Coupled with the addictive nature of junk food which acts as a comforter. Reducation and Cognitive behaviour therapy is needed. And I agree about gym membership being too expensive!

It's never as simple as just being lazy and greedy. There is always something behind it, even the most cheerful fat man who loves food, there is always an issue in the background.
Just did a quick online check. You buy a lettuce, pack of tomatoes, cucumber, pack of ham and a bag of mixed salad (rocket, spinach etc) more than enough to make a healthy meal for 4-6 people. Total cost in Sainsbury £5.25. Price for a medium Big Mac meal is £4.29 per head (total for 6 people = £25.74)...nuff said...
