'Spitfire funds' were well known, few towns of any size did not have one.
There were also scrap metal collecting schemes to 'Build a Spitfire' bit of a misnomer as the scrap metal as over 90% Iron and Spitfires were made mainly of Aluminium.

I found it to be an interesting "side-story" to that period of history: people uniting for a great cause.

Wasn't till later in the war that RAF pilots had a inflatable dingy underneath their parachute packs. 'Dinghy Young' obviously put them to good use once they were issued, :-)
