Question About The Great War .........

I might be missing something here, but I always thought that the Great War was WWI and was 1914 - 1918.
So when I went for a walk through a village called Barley, earlier today, I was a bit confused when I came across this:

The only thing I can think of, is that someone honoured by the memorial must have died in 1919 as a result of the war (long term injury maybe??).

Any thoughts ....... am I missing something else ??

Yes you are. The armistice was in 1918 but the peace treaty was not concluded until 1919 so technically the war lasted till then, although there was no fighting.

The first world war finished in 1919, hostilities finished with the German surrender in 1918.

The Armistice was in November 1918 - but we (I've consulted OH, who is a bit knowledgeable on this) think that bits of it continued into 1919. We'd have to research as to details and I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the full caboodle. Possibly one of the named people died in one of the last skirmishes in 1919.

I was aware of the 11th Nov 1918, but wasn't aware that it didn't finish 'til 1919.
A bit confusing though, 'cos all books, etc, list WWI running from 1914 - 1918.

Hostilities ceased with the signing of the armistice on 11 November 1918 but the two sides actually remained at war with each other until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. (Technically, the whole thing wasn't brought to an end until 24 June 1923, when the Allies signed a peace treaty with Turkey, but pedants might argue that 6 August 1924 would be a better date, as that's when the final parts of that treaty came into effect).

I was gonna suggest ignorance or that the war in Barley was deemed to end in 1919 with the treaties of versailles

the only thing is .... I havent heard that point of view before
( even at school with the older masters who were in it )

I think it looks like an error a 9 instead of an 8 .
Bit of a boo boo that, not too easy to correct a typo when it has been carved into stone!
Many people were injured in the war but did not die until months or years later so I don't think it was that, it is the time of the conflict that counts not the time they died.
Where is this village, there is a village called Barley just up the road from me, if it is that Barley I will have a look next time I am over there, my doctors surgery is in Barley.

These anomalies crop up now and then. Technically speaking the town of Berwick-on-Tweed is still at war with Russia because although specifically mentioned in the declaration of war because of its disputed status, English or Scottish, it was not mentioned in the peace treaty (Crimean War).

the fella has a book on it but I think that would be on the war and not on the possible dates

and waterboatman the Germans didnt surrender on 11 Nov 18 an armistice was signed ( by erzberger et al ) - a stab in the back and the cause of much turmoil - and all the signers of the armistice on the german side were dead within 10y

A war does not end until a peace treaty has been signed. Thus North and South Korea are still technically at war, although a truce was signed in 1953.

thing is - most people take the war in Europe tohave ceased on VE day and the war in the pacific on VJ day....

and the other thing is that altho we all know that the treaty of versailles was signed in 1919 none of us at school so far was taught the war ended on anything beside 11 Nov 18

There were no peace treaties after WWII. There was no need for them as in both cases it was unconditional surrender.
