I spent a month in the USSR when Brezhnev was at the height of his powers. I used to deliberately annoy my hosts by constantly referring to Leningrad as St Petersburg. The country seemed to be in an iron grip; if someone at the time had told me that in 17 years it would be gone I would not have believed them. I thought it was there to stay for ever.
