I have watched a lot of episodes of that brilliant series
'World At War ' , narrated by the excellent Laurence Olivier .

Yes we didn't seem to be at all bothered that the war was not actually over, Japan needed to surrender, but look what was needed to end that far distant war?

At a celebratory party in our road, an American G.I. and I won the wheelbarrow race - I was the wheel barrow - but he really cheated and lifted me so my hands were clear of the grass and just ran, but nobody cared at all.
I can't recall what the prize was, but it can't have been much as there was so little of anything but everyone was overjoyed and I had the prospect of my dad soon returning from the war.
