Probably 19th. January 1952 at the 5 Nations Rugby Union match at Twickenham (England vs Wales). I would think that it wouldn't have been played at either the following France vs Ireland match on 26th. January or the Wales vs Scotland match on 2nd. February. England didn't play again until 15th. March, although other 5 Nation matches were played, the long gap...

Presumably just before George V1 died.
He died 6th Feb. 1942, don't know which day that was, but probably last sung the day before.
1952 jourdain2
1952 and it was a Tuesday.
Correct. It was not clear whether he died late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

Sorry, meant to type '52. Having major probs. with internet today.
I wonder when we'll sing it again?
"Presumably just before George V1 died." You make it sound like there had been a band waiting in the wings in readiness so they could play "God Save The King" seconds before his death.
My father noted in his diary ( I was just two weeks old and feature before that)

"Town Crier came round and told us the King had died."

Darzet somewhere - Beaminster - pop 800 I think.

During the War - it was recommended to keep the radio on the whole time and - "someone had to man the radio!"
TheOP referenced a sporting event, The Corbyloon.
oh ! 1936 and George V had died ( aided by morphine timed for the bulletins they say )
and someone came around to my father who was now a medical student and said
Pedant you looking for a job ( den )
and my dear late father was taking evening jobs froo uni for the munnay

and Gluckman said - Buckingham Palace - the King has just abdicated.....( Dec 1936 )

J2 I know but you said JUST before he died.
Autumn 1951 I would have thought
( last time for God Save the King )

The kings pneumonectomy was late Dec 1951
Clarence Price Thomas and Ivan Magill I think
( who dey den?)
and he personally knighted Thomas 23 Dec 51

when Princess Elizabeth ( as she then was) left for the commonwealth tour the King saw her off at the airport

and at the newsreels in cinemas
audiences gasped at how ill the King looked.
It was a bitterly cold day and he wasn't wearing a hat.
Were his last words, "bug ger Bogner" or was that another king?
That was George V.

England's first international football match wasn't until April 1952, after the King's death.
As a schoolboy, I remember that all BBC radio transmissions (there was no TV to speak of) were switched off several days, amazing really!
What happens I wonder if the monarch hops twig and for whatever reason the gender of the next one is unclear: I don’t mean trans or questioning you understand, just a situation where the succession was problematic. Should there be a gender neutral version?
