Why is it that invariably one steps DOWn when entering a church and rarely UP

I agree IAP, it is more likely to be a particular access issue than anything that would try to indicate you are entering a higher place! In side the church they managed to get that message across quite easily with the seating arrangemants. In the days when it was virtually compoulsory to attend the services on a Sunday, or face your Master, the seating was made up of enclosed screened stalls for the Lords and gentry, benches for the yeoman and merchants and then standing room only at the back for the peasants, And most people were peasants back in those days!!!!! So everyone knew their place.
