Old Contemptibles - after the 1st. Battle of Ypres the Tommies were proud to adopt this name. Odd, isn't it, how terms of abuse readily become v. acceptable ? The Desert Rats is such a case, and Rommel was proud to be known by them as 'that cunning old b******d.. Even 'Pommies' and 'Limeys' are strangely terms we readily take on board. Other nations do not seem to be as welcoming of their soubriquets.
