For the most part, Churchill was a political failure, swapping parties throughout his career. Lots of failures leading up to WW2, then cometh the hour, cometh the man. He was a callous and ruthless leader who would think nothing of sacrificing people and equipment in the name of victory, because in wartime, people get killed, but that could lead to success against the enemy. After WW2, he reverted to being a poor politician. I wouldn't say he was the greatest ever Briton, but he was ONE of the greatest. Aided very much during the war by the Americans, who helped most of the allies actually. The vast majority of military equipment used by the Russians was manufactured in the USA. But, the OP asks what kind of man was Churchill? TBH, I don't know. We mainly only knew him as a politician. See above.

The French, Italians, Irish, and Belgians were all ready to cooperate and serve the needs of the Germans. Nothing changes. The debts to the avaricious yanks, incurred trying to stop Hitler, were finally paid in full during the leadership of another great Britain. Mrs Thatcher.

Without the USA in WW2, the UK might well have become a satellite of the USSR. Whether they wanted paying or not, without the USA, it would have been the Ruskies that won it, not us. Apart from the BOB, what other finest hours were there for Britain before the Yanks entered the war? Churchill was a great leader in WW2, but generally, a political failure.
