On This Day In History.....1846
Neptune was first observed by Johann Galle. The presence of which had previously been mathematically predicted by Cornishman John Couch Adams who was interested in the irregularities in the motion of Uranus.

Oddly enough Neptune had been observed before this by several astronomers starting with Galileo in 1612 but he did not realise it was a planet because it did not appear to move against the background stars. It was only when John Adams gave the position from his calculations that it was formally identified, found only 1 degree away from where he predicted. What a genius!
