Rod...huh??? What are 'rods'??? Sorry for being thick... :)
I've watched a couple of programmes on this and the only explanation I can discover as to their only being noticed in the last 20 or so years is twofold. First the advent of high speed video cameras becoming standard, I have owned 2 super 8 film cameras and their shutter speed was very limited. Secondly their apparant speed being in 100mph+ range and for something that small it would be nigh impossible to see. I'm keeping an open mind until evidence one way or other is produced but I don't believe they're UFO's

But they most be real, didn't that documentary on Sky One say so? I'm not sure actually I found something better to watch on the other side.
The truth is out there.............. ;)

Blender's definately got a point - cheaper cameras with better capabilites means more people filming thus more opportunities to capture 'unexplained' phenonemae.
Thanks Blender. I checked the site. Oooh what funny things they are. I'm no scientist but UFOs don't instantly spring to mind. Must be some bizarre natural phenomenon.
The big question thats not been asked is "what do they eat" and how do the stay still enough to gat high energy food. Think of a humming bird and the amount that such a small bird needs. Mind you if you took a photo of a humming bird feeding many years ago with an old fashioned slow shutter speed camera would the wing speed not look similar to a rods. I know that you would see the body and head but the wing would be a blur and could look like it was undulating. The more I think about it the more questions come to mind
Part of the problem is probably that although modern cameras are fast, the camera operator is not fast enough to focus, track and shoot such an object. The shots of hummingbirds, etc. happen because the camera is set up on a flower and the birds hovers for a brief time in focus. I think the rod-like shape is probably a blurring of the insect/weird beastie/vanguard of alien fleet out to suck all our brains out. (Delete as appropriate to your own belief.) In all the films, the rods are caught flashing about, but never close enough to get a clear shot. Personally, I would like to go to one of these locations with a big, kevlar weave net and try and catch one. Catch one, get some good close-up shots of whatever it is and then sell the rights to some american network show with wads of cash. Personally, I think that if it is real, it's an insect of some sort.
