Most historians credit General Benedict Arnold's victories over the British (sorry) on and around Lake Champlain as being key to France's decision to enter the war. Ironically, the name Bendict Arnold today is a synonym for traitor. Diplomatically, Benjamin Franklin was U.S. Deiplomat to France during the War...He negotiated and signed the Treaty of Alliance with France in 1778...
ol Ben Franklin was the real swayer according to the americans (although he was pro-british and admired the british culture!). Did the french really need any persuasion???? the old enemy eh!
