John Wayne. All very confusing.
Seriously though, no one has ever been sure where the Huns originally started off, although attempts have been made to link them with the 'Hsiung-Nu' referred to by the ancient Chinese as raiding their borders. All the steppe nomad peoples were, by definition, very hard to define or pin down, and while the Mongols left a historical tradition (Secret History of...etc) the Huns are only really known through the second-hand observations and legends of their enemies.
according to a recent book on Gengis Khan, one in every 200 people on the planet is related by blood to Gengis Khan due to the prolific empire building of the latter, so possibility of further ancestral descent.
probably on one level the khans of later years would want to make an association back with Attila to give legitimacy to their reigns (as future khans would so with Genghis)
