Wooden Box

A wooden box possibly German from WW2 has come into my possession. It has the word Kasten 2 printed on the top and inside has such words as Schrauben, Multern & Scheiben. Can anyone please tell me what it was used for?

Schrauben = Screws
Muttern = Nuts
Schieben = Washers

The box must have been used in maintenance or manufacturing of certain parts... as kempie has explained. The printing on the outside of the box simply implies that it is Box # 2 that held various hardware. Kasten can mean box, display case, bin or chest, depending on the context...
