......... Woodrow Wilson (1856 - 1924) was a Democrat and President of the United States 1913 - 1921. WW1 commenced in 1914 and on 6 April 1917 Wilson brought the US into the war. However, he refused to sign any form of alliance with Britain or France and the US Forces operated as an Independent Unit under the command of General John Pershing. I don't see any reason to mock. People generally know what they have been taught, what they have been exposed to through experience, what they have read, or what they have been told in a pub quiz.

I once saw a quotation, and though I can't remember it verbatim, I'll share it with you. It was generally of the order that one shouldn't ridicule a person for his lack of knowledge merely because he was born after you.

How many people (general UK population) would be able to say with any certainty who Britain's Prime Minister was during WWI?

Furthermore, how many would be able to name Woodrow Wilson with any certainty?

Particularly in this day and age considering what is taught and what is not taught in schools.

IBefore you mock, take the time to think back and consider what you knew and didn't know in school.

Well said shammydodger! My knowledge now (in my 40's) is so much more widespread than in my student days. looking back, I can't believe how little I really knew. Experience is what really builds the knowledge.

Looking back at my school days, it really rankles with me when I recall the arrogance of certain teachers whose pride at what they knew, more than their pupils, shone like a beacon.

If I'd had a better English teacher, I might have come up with a more original simile than that one!

Britain's Prime Minister in 1914 when WW 1 commenced was Herbert Henry Asquith. He had been Prime Minister since 1908. In 1916 Mr Asquith was replaced by David Lloyd George who was still Prime Minister at the end of WW 1 and remained so until 1922. Here is Mr Asquith, and here is Mr Lloyd George. Mr Asquith was artistic, and here is a cover of a book of childrens poems entitled "Come and change (you can be anything you want)". Mr Lloyd George had a train named after him at Ffestiniog which is still running.
