If Christ was the king of the jews, how did christianity come about?. At what point did the Jewish and Christian faiths diverge. This may seem a stupid question but my religious knowledge is very poor.

Jesus was not King Of the Jews - this ironic and mocking title was given to him as he was crucified - the sign above him on the cross confirms this. Christianity was created as soon as the Apostles acknowledged that Jesus had gone to heaven, and returned. as he said he would.
Whilst it is true that Jesus wsn't the King of the Jews, he was supposedly sent to Earth by God to continue and further His work and Word to the humans. The Jewish faith, however, refuses to acknowledge Jesus as the son of God and are still awaiting God's first coming and as such do not accept the New Testament or its teachings. Christianity was started by the disciples and spread across the globe and DOES acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God, and that His coming to Earth, teachings and subsequent execution and resurresction all formed a new extension to the scriptures and therefore, the New Testament.
Jesus initially preached within the Jewish community, but then started to preach that the word of God was not just for God's chosen people but was for all, which is one of the reasons why the Jewish elders wanted ride of him. Christianity came about because the apostles carried forward this doctrine that the word of God was for all and preached to / converted Jews & Gentiles alike.
