Hi,

I'm currently putting together my family tree.....

I'm struggling to find the name of my grandad's mother. I know her maiden name but can't find her first name anywhere? Can anyone suggest a place I maybe able to find this information?

Many Thanks

Do you know the date of birth of your grandad? Or his approximate age, at least, and place of birth?

Yes, I know his date of birth
In that case, you can apply to the General Register Office for your grandad's birth certificate. Go to this site:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/ index.asp

Follow their directions and fill in an online form. You will need to give them the index reference for the birth registration. To find this, there are a number of free sites you could use to search for it. One of these is FreeBMD, although their records might not be complete. Another site is ancestry.co.uk. To search their records, you will need to sign up for a 14-days free trial. If you do, be aware that it is a deferred subscription, so if you don't wish to sign-up after your trial has ended, you will need to contact them to cancel.

Of course, you can also search the national birth registration index at your local records office.
Or you can get a copy of your Grandads birth certificate from the register office where his birth was registered, if you know which one it was.

Both answers are great - thank you!
However, is there anywhere available on the internet to find this information?
hi chris,

you could try some of the on line sites with census access, if you know where your grandad was living, if he wasn't born by 1901,where there any older siblings... then that might crack the mystery.

hope this is of some help

good luck

If you know where she was in 1901/1891/1881 etc you could check the census for that year, obviously it would be easier if your Grandad was also alive in one for one of the census, or any older siblings or your Great Grandfather.
If you go to the freeBMD site . . .

Click on search . . .

Click on marriage . . .

Enter a range of years when you think your great-grandparents were married . . .

Enter your great-grandfather's full name . . .

Enter your great-grandmother's maiden name . . .

Click on find . . .

And you will get a range of possibilities.

Good luck.
Check with your local library. Ours is offering a free introductory course on tracing your family tree with free access to the ancestry web site. It was a great help to me in getting started.
Hi didnt read all the answers but if you go on www.192.com you can access these areas here. some information is free, but to access some other stuff it costs and you have to buy credits
