A metal codpiece was a regular component of suits of armour c.1500. Apparently the codpiece from one of Henry VIII's armours at the Tower of London used to be available for barren wives to stick pins into the lining as a fertility rite. Try image googling Henry VIII armour for illustration. Sausage o' Steel sounds like the Scottish nickname...
