If you have Excel as your spreadsheet programme, you can format a cell to be a Custom date (Format menu, select Cells, go to the Number tab and select Custom from the Category list. In the Type field, type in ddd dd/mm/yyyy. Click OK). In your cell type the desired date, e.g. 18/07/1954 and press Enter. It will put the day of the week in automatically, in this case, Sun 18/07/1954.
I dare say other spreadsheet programmes will have a similar function.
