I seem to remember that I was taken by my parents to see an original old theatre (Elizabethan? Restoration? Georgian?) which wasn't functioning as a theatre at the time, which would have been late 1950s - mid 1960s(ish). All I can remember is something of the interior and the fact that the outside walls seemed very high. I've no way of asking now where it might have been - can anyone place it for me?

any idea where - ie in England? London?
Elizabethan, victorian theatre with high walls? Plenty of those throughout the UK, you havent given us much to narrow it down.
was it fully enclosed, all under a roof? Elizabethan theatres (like the Globe) weren't, so that might help narrow it down.

Oh dear, I thought the shakiness of my memory might cause problems! My visual memory is of walking up a narrow street towards a tall, dark (wood?) building, possibly round or at least with curved walls. I know that would suggest Elizabethan, but as far as I am aware, there were no theatres of that period still standing.

As to what part of the country, it could be almost anywhere. My History teacher father used to take us all over the place looking at interesting buildings and this one sticks in my memory. However, we are going back around fifty years, so my memory may be confusing me!
List of Elizabethan theatres here based in London, not sure if any of these jog a memory, or even if they still existed in the 20th C

Thanks, jno - I'm working on it! I feel a bit silly asking with so little information to go onj, but it was worth a try.

Thanks, pingping - what a belting site! I don't think it actually helps, because the Globe wasn't built at the time I'm thinking about, but I will be using some of that information with my students next September!
