Rome started being involved in the wider Med world from 240BCE onwards as the conflict with Cathage widened, but had long trade connections with Greece (most of the cities of southern Italy were Greek colonies from 750-500BC anyway). Ilyrian pirates drew them into Dalmatia(former Yugoslavian area) before 240BCE, but true conflict with Greek city states started in the gap between the Puncic Wars and beyond, during the wars know as the "Macedonian Wars", when Rome's mandate went from protector of, to ruler of Greece by 146BC. The greeks were too troublesome to be left alone and in the same year as the Third Punic/Carthaginian war and the sack of Carthage, Corinth was also sacked and Greece formally contituted as a roman province from 146BC
