The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was founded on October 1, 1958 in response to the Soviet Union's successful launch of the first Sputnik the year before. The agency's official mission was: "To provide for research into problems of flight within and outside the Earth's atmosphere, and for other purposes."
