Anyone who saw the last-minute excavations in Turkey before the site was flooded may well have thought this was one of the saddest archaological events ever recorded. Although appreciating that there is tremendous demand for investigation of so many sites, I did wonder if the fact that there were no British working there during the final days, implied that ancient enmities, France vs Britain going back maybe to Napoleonic Egyptian days played any part? I recall John .... who was attempting a re-dating of the Pharoahnic calendar of kings being denied access in Paris to a particualr stone he needed to see, and that seemed to me to be motivated solely by spite.
